Join Kayla Boisvert, Independent Consultant and Cory Georgopoulos, Senior Associate, Innovation Network as they present on using comics in evaluation.

Comics are an engaging and innovative method for sharing back findings in evaluation. Defined as 'sequential art,' comics effectively combine images and narrative to convey messages, making them ideal for communicating stories in ways that are accessible to a wide range of audiences. Within evaluation, participatory visual methods, such as comics, are increasingly valued for their role in democratizing the research process. They amplify the voices and experiences of participants, recognize diverse perspectives, and foster deeper engagement with the research topic among both participants and researchers.

Comics offer flexibility in their creation—they can be hand-drawn, computer-generated, or developed through collage. They can be crafted by the evaluator, or they can be developed in partnership with participants in a single focus group session or across multiple sessions. Whether fully participant-drawn, collaboratively created with the researcher, or used to facilitate group discussions, comics can effectively narrate a wide array of experiences and topics.

However, evaluators often shy away from incorporating images into their work due to perceived artistic limitations or concerns about analysis. This session aims to address these concerns. Participants will see several examples of comics we have used to share information back to participants and wider audiences. They will also learn about the key steps and tips and tricks to creating comics of their own. The session will conclude with group reflection, centering on participants' experiences and emphasizing equity considerations such as power dynamics, ethics, representation, and participation. Prior experience in drawing or comics is not required, as various creation methods will be modeled.
